Good evening American Canyon Planning Commissioners,
My name is Maia Medalle, I am a Senior at American Canyon High School, and alongside other high school students, I have worked tirelessly as a representative of Napa Schools 4 Climate Action.
Napa Schools for Climate Action is a group composed of passionate students, teachers, staff, local government officials, and citizens all across Napa County & the NVUSD. Our motto is that no school should be a silent witness to climate injustice.
I write to you to acknowledge the consideration of Measure L. I have called the city of American Canyon my home for my entire life. Many residents of my community can attest to the beauty and value of the nature parks within our city, such as Wetlands Edge Park. As a Senior at American Canyon High School and an AP Environmental Studies student, I have learned the multitude of environmental services that wetlands offer to our community. This water-blanketed soil plays a significant role in acting as a “liver” for the groundwater in our community, it protects our neighborhoods from flooding, and most importantly, helps to sequester carbon from our atmosphere.
I address the benefits of our wetlands to encourage our residents to recognize the importance of preserving them. Recently, fellow members and I of Napa Schools 4 Climate Action encouraged the American Canyon City Council to uphold their commitment, “...to achieve its goal of net zero climate pollution by 2030,” as stated in our city’s General Plan. This implies protecting the natural carbon sinks, such as the wetlands, that help our city successfully uphold its commitment.
I encourage my fellow American Canyon residents to recognize how our city must align its goals with the commitments outlined in our General Plan. As a voice for our future generation of policymakers, advocates, and young residents, I ask you to ponder whether Measure L will guarantee a healthy environment for us to inherit.
Our future is in your hands, and my generation looks to you, trusting you will make the right decisions.
