This comment is about the Proposed Draft Fiscal Year 2026/27 Work Plan Items, which includes the item on a Reusable Foodware Ordinance. Thank you for addressing the reusable foodware issue in American Canyon. As a volunteer with Napa Climate NOW!, I have worked with others to develop a draft Reusable Foodware and Waste Reduction Ordinance, which served as a model for Napa County's ordinance. We have also been engaged with the Climate Action Committee which recommended that all jurisdictions in Napa Valley pass such ordinances. We are currently engaged in discussions with the City of Napa on developing and passing their own Reusable Foodware Ordinance.
In developing an ordinance, we recommend including the same components as the County to minimize confusion among various ordinances throughout the valley. These components include:
• Reusable foodware only for dining in
• Disposable foodware by request only
• Compostable foodware only for takeout
• Charge for disposable foodware
• Ban on polystyrene
• Ban on plastic beverage containers at public events
The benefits of passing such an ordinance are several:
• Reduction of litter
• Reduction of pollution of our waterways
• Increased safety for land and sea animals
• Reduction in greenhouse gases leading to climate change
• Financial savings for businesses
• Improving customer’s experience
We have been working on this issue since 2021, and feel we are quite knowledgable about the issue. We would be happy to meet with any of you, or present at a meeting in the future, as you address the Reusable Foodware issue. Thank you again for addressing the Reusable Foodware Ordinance.
