Land Use Element, Goal 1E
Adobe Lumber's current appearance and operation are neither suitable nor attractive for the upcoming town center. The mill's operations begins at 06:00 on weekdays and runs until 15:30. The continual noise exceeds acceptable levels for the surrounding residential areas. It produces chemically treated sawdust that spreads across adjacent residential areas, impacting air quality. The noise and sawdust prevent residents from enjoying their outdoor spaces.
After two years since the first residents moved in, no updates from the city on relocation have materialized. When the WRSP was zoned years ago, the city knew that placing residential areas so close to an industrial operation would result in excessive noise and pollution. Failure to resolve this conflict must now be recognized as a breach of duty of care to residents’ health and welfare and must be mitigated. It is proposed that the city publicly commits to:
i) relocate Adobe Lumber within 6 months.
ii) move to binding arbitration or to the courts should no agreement be reached.
iii) offer support to residents, including:
- Triple glazing for noise
- Whole-house air filters for pollution
- Compensation for loss of enjoyment of outdoor spaces
Thank you for your attention to these important matters and for reading them into the record.
