4.) Rio Del Mar Bicycle Improvements

It is great to see bicycle infrastructure added as part of the repaving project, and the opportunity for community input.

I have the choice to drive my car or use my bicycle for transportation. Within our relatively small town, the latter is quite possible and has many benefits, including environmental, health, and of course, the sheer enjoyment of the ride itself and possibility of waving to neighbors.

I have ridden a few times on Rio Del Mar in this last month, on the exact segment proposed for this change. Thankfully they were weekend trips and no other cars were on the road.

I encourage you to adopt Option 2 with the separate Class II bike lines. This will allow more bicyclists to use road, as riding on streets with Class III requires more experience and skill with navigating cars.

I also feel strongly that instead of waiting for technology to reverse the damage caused by fossil fuels, let's be proactive and take measurers to reduce it ourselves by promoting bicycle trips vs car trips. Having safer bike lanes will encourage more people to ride bicycles.

Most homes in the older neighborhoods already have garages and driveways for parking. So a home with a single car garage already has parking for 2 cars, while one with a two car garage has parking for four cars. Newer housing development trends already limit street parking and sidewalks. Homes that need additional parking beyond their personal spaces will still have the option to share in the public parking spaces.

In addition to supporting adopt Option 2 with the separate Class II bike, I would also like to bring to your attention two issues impacting our bicycling community:

    1) Lack of bicycle parking at Wetlands Edge Park.
    2) Car parking that blocks bicycle path exists. In particular, the bicycle path by the tennis courts to the Community Garden -- drivers are parking in front of the drop curb, on both sides of the street, which effectively blocks the exit for bicyclists.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide input.
